Metro Atlanta Residents, Plan Ahead for Sales Tax Holidays!

Ready, set…save! Georgia’s sales tax holidays are coming up fast! Metro Atlanta residents can look forward to back-to-school savings with the July 30-31 tax holiday. The tax holiday exempts clothing, computers and school supplies from sales taxes, under certain guidelines. Here’s what you need to know!

Georgia Sales Tax Holiday for Back-to-School items:

Clothing, including footwear, is exempt from sales tax as long as the purchase of each item is $100 or less. Things like belts, socks, ties, hats and gloves are also eligible. Baby clothing and diapers also qualify! 然而, certain accessories and jewelry do 不 qualify. Examples of non-qualifying items include purses, umbrellas, sunglasses and watches.

Computers, computer components and software priced $1,000 or less will be exempt from sales tax. The purchases must not be for business or commercial use. Examples of eligible products include laptops, tablets, e-book readers, monitors, printers, ink cartridges, hard drives and data storage devices. Products that are 不 eligible include televisions, cell phones and digital cameras.

School supplies with a sales price of $20.00 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax. Just about every common school supply is included. Ineligible products are briefcases, envelopes, and any supplies used for business or commercial purposes.

To make the most of the tax holiday, prepare your shopping list in advance, and compare it to the 的ficial list of eligible products. Many retailers offer corresponding sales and specials during the same weekend, so plan ahead, and enjoy the savings!

This is also a great time to make purchases for charity. You can save sales taxes on the purchases now, and if you itemize your income tax return, enjoy the write-off next filing season. (Save your receipts! See IRS.gov or your tax preparer for rules on itemized deductions!)

Georgia Sales Tax Holiday for Home Efficiency Products:

Atlanta homeowners, mark your calendars for the next tax holiday on September 30 through October 2, 2016! This tax holiday applies to energy-efficient and water-efficient products, making it a great time to tackle some home improvements!

Qualifying purchases include ENERGY STAR® products and WaterSense® products, with a purchase price of $1,500 or less per item. Examples eligible products include:

  • 视窗
  • Doors
  • Major appliances
  • Ceiling fans
  • High-efficiency toliets
  • Shower heads
  • Bathroom sink faucets
  • Weather or sensor-based irrigation controllers
