Let’s Do Brunch: Buttermilk Kitchen in Atlanta’s Buckhead
Another culinary gem found in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood on Roswell Road, Buttermilk Kitchen is a local favorite, famed for everything from biscuits to pancakes to fried chicken and cornbread! The breakfast and lunch concept restaurant was created by chef Suzanne Vizethann with a mission to nurture people through food using sustainable ingredients found in the area— the restaurant even supplies a list of vendors so you know exactly where your food is coming from!
Most everything at Buttermilk Kitchen is made from scratch, in-house— the culinary dreams of Chef Vizethann come to life. If you didn’t already know, Vizethann won the 2011 season of Food Network’s Chopped and ran the lunch counter, The Hungry Peach, inside the private design center ADAC. In 2012, she opened this now popular eatery, specializing in breakfast and lunch six days per week.
On the menu, you’ll find tried-and-true breakfast favorites like french toast, buttermilk pancakes, and egg scrambles, as well as Southern staples like their delicious chicken biscuits and pimento omelet. For lunch, the menu gets turned up a notch with a fried green tomato and pimento cheese sandwich, Brunswick stew and griddled cornbread, meatloaf burger, pulled BBQ chicken sandwich and of course, banana pudding!
What initially drew me into Buttermilk Kitchen was the Green Tea Oatmeal and the locally sourced coffee from Rev Coffee Roasters— so amazing! Of course, the buttermilk biscuit with local honey is TO DIE. And not only is it delicious and locally sourced, it has a fun story! A high school kid from Galloway School around the corner, who worked for Buttermilk during the summers, was the youngest Master Beekeeper in Georgia at one point! Inspired by the book, The Secret Life of Bees, Julia Mahood, started beekeeping in her backyard in 2004. Her son, Noah Macey, immediately took an interest! Their honey is like none other. These bees are never treated with chemicals, natural or artificial, and are never fed sugar water. Their honey, called ITP Honey, is beyond compare and delicious!
The toughest part about Buttermilk Kitchen is the tight parking and long lines, but that is a sign you must grab a French press coffee and relax on the porch while you are waiting for your much-anticipated table! Buttermilk Kitchen is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM to 3 PM. And if you catch it, the restaurant hosts a “Fancy Fried Chicken Dinner” only once per month!
Along with the South African eatery, 10 Degrees South, Buttermilk Kitchen is located in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, known as one of the wealthiest communities in the country. The area is filled with top-notch restaurants (as you can see!), hotels, shopping and more! You could not ask for a better location for this highly desirable Atlanta culinary hotspot! So if you’re looking for a new home in Atlanta, take a drive through Buckhead on your way to Buttermilk Kitchen— you’ll be glad you did!
